DOH Douses Alley Pond with Another Round of Larvicide

The city is giving the marshy areas another good go-around as mosquito season comes to a close.

Mosquito season is coming to a close, but the Department of Health is going to douse the area with larvicide one last time before the end of summer.

Areas to be sprayed include the marshy portions of Alley Pond Park, as well as swaths of Pelham Bay, Dubos Point, Edgemere Park and the abandoned Flushing Airport. The spraying will take place Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Larvicide, unlike pesticide, does not contain chemicals, and has been used multiple times throughout the past few months to kill off West Nile-carrying mosquitoes.

The DOH also recommends that residents take the following additional precautions to help protect themselves from getting bitten:

  •  Use an approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (not for children under three), or products that contain the active ingredient IR3535.
  • Make sure windows have screens and repair or replace screens that have tears or holes. Eliminate any standing water from your property and dispose of containers that can collect water.
  • Standing water is a violation of the New York City Health Code. Make sure roof gutters are clean and draining properly.
  • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs. Keep them empty or covered if not in use; drain water that collects in pool covers.

Residents can report standing water by calling 311 or visiting nyc.gov/health/wnv.
