Destiny of District Remains to Be Seen, Says Ackerman

NYS to lose two seats in Congress, according to Census Bureau

The Congressional District encompassing Northeast Queens and parts of Long Island may be absorbed by other districts —some analysts speculate—as a result of slow population growth.

New York State stands to lose two seats in the House of Representatives to redistricting. Relative to other states, New York made a poor showing in population figures released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.

"My district will grow to 719,000 plus, as will all 27 districts in the state," said Ackerman. "The lines remain to be seen."

A report published in the National Journal speculates that it is the 5th Congressional District's Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Queens and Long Island, who may yield his seat in 2012 to retirement.

Washington Post analyst Chris Cillizza doesn't fix squarely on Ackerman ceding his district, but writes that he does believe the City will lose one representative to redistricting— and not lone Republican, Michael Grimm of Staten Island.
