Cuomo: Expect No Major Change to NYC's New Gun Control Law

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, told reporters on Wednesday that the state may amend the recently enacted gun control law so that Hollywood productions are exempt from the assault-weapons ban, according to the Democrat and Chronicle.

But apart from that, Cuomo said, expect no major changes.

“I don’t know that it’s a real issue because they don’t use real guns,” Cuomo said of movie producers. The state makes a lot of money bringing movie production companies to the area and the state wants to continue to facilitate that, he said.

However, Hollywood movie-makers are not the issue nor concern of gun-rights groups who are gathering in Albany today for a major pro-gun rally. Gun supporters are calling on the governor to repeal the law entirely—one they say is too stringent and hastily passed.

But Cuomo affirmed: Aside from a possible exemption for Hollywood production companies and other “technical corrections,” the law will remain in place.
