Court Halts City's Taxi of Tomorrow Plan: Report

Judge rules that plan violates law that gives driver the option of a hybrid.

A state Supreme Court judge has ruled against the city’s “Taxi of Tomorrow” plan on the grounds that it violates a law requiring cab drivers to have the option to use a hybrid, NY 1 reports.

The city ‘s Taxi and Limousine Commission had chosen the Nissan NV-200 for its cab drivers, but the vehicle is not currently offered as a hybrid.

The TLC was scheduled to vote today on a proposal that would allow drivers to buy hybrids until that option was available for the NV-200, according to NY 1. But the vote has since been called off.
“The TLC is acting immediately to ensure that taxi owners will continue to have the option to purchase a hybrid vehicle, even once the Taxi of Tomorrow hits the road in October,” said David Yassky, the agency’s commissioner. “This ruling will not delay the Taxi of Tomorrow's implementation."
