City Unveils New Map of Hurricane Evacuation Zones

Bayside has two shelters listed on the Office of Emergency Management's map.

The city has released a list of new hurricane shelters - including two in Bayside - and evacuation zones that added more than 600,000 residents.

The new map of evacuation zones, which was revised following Hurricane Sandy’s visit to the five boroughs, has changed the previous method of labeling zones from ‘A,’ ‘B’ and ‘C’ has been replaced with Zones 1 through 6.

Bayside has two hurricane shelters - Bayside High School, located at 32-24 Corporal Kennedy St., and Queensborough Community College, located at 222-05 56th Ave.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management created the new map by using storm surge data from Hurricane Sandy as well as models from the Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service.

“Being prepared for any emergency is the best way to keep you and your family safe – know your hurricane evacuation zone number,” said Joseph Bruno, commissioner of the Office of Emergency Management. “Make an emergency plan with your family. Always have a go bag packed with essentials you may need in the event that you have to leave your house at a moment’s notice.”
