City to Crack Down on Dangerous Delivery Bikers

New rules will mandate safety courses and gear for commercial bicyclists with the DOT taking over the job of enforcement.

The City Council approved a plan Thursday that would require bicycle delivery workers to take a required safety course, paid for by their employer, according to NY1.

A second bill calls for penalties for businesses that do not provide safety gear for their delivery people, such as helmets and reflectors. Also, the New York City Department of Transportation will now have enforcement power over commercial bicyclists – previously the job of the NYPD.

For now, the Department of Transportation has only six people to enforcing the new rules. However, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn told the news channel that the goal is to increase those numbers in the next few months.

"We want the days of the Wild Wild West to come to an end," City Councilman James Vacca, D-Bronx, told NY1. "We've had too many instances where people on commercial bikes have really posed a danger."

A New York State Restaurant Association spokesman told the Associated Press that safety courses could be helpful, but adds that some of the other measures are more likely to burden businesses.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
