CB 11 Approves Green Market's Application for Summer 2012

Market would operate at Douglaston's LIRR station from July 8 to Nov. 18.

Community Board 11 has voted unanimously in approval to allow to operate in the traffic circle at the neighborhood’s Long Island Rail Road station this summer.

The market, which is managed by city nonprofit GrowNYC, will open July 8 and run through Nov. 18.

“It could always be a little better attended, but overall it’s been highly successful,” CB 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece said of the market.

The board voted in a show of hands to approve the market and no objections were made.

The Doug Bay Manor Civic Association, which represents more than 60 homes located within several blocks of the LIRR station, had .

But Iannece said the civic had been appeased after the market did not cause traffic or parking problems in the community last summer.

Bernie Haber, the board’s Transportation Committee chairman, said the market had put in its application with the city.

Last year, the market’s vendors sold turkeys, seafood, bread, vegetables, fruit, baked goods, cheese, lamb and pastries.

Douglaston leaders said they hope to get local civic groups and students more involved with the market in 2012 as well as hold flower shows at the site.

At its meeting, the board also discussed how .

“District lines for legislators have been drawn and we will be affected,” Iannece said. “Senatorial lines will not be changed too much. But Assembly lines have changed substantially. [State Assemblyman Edward] Braunstein has gotten a larger piece and a new district is being created east and west of the Long Island Expressway. Some communities are being cut in half. The lines are still in a state of flux.”

CB 11 will hold an election for its chairman and other top positions at its March 5 meeting.
