Braunstein Swears In

Who's Who of Queens Politics Turn Out for State Assemblyman's Auburndale Swearing-In Event

Edward Braunstein, D-Bayside, may be a freshman state Assemblyman, but according to one seasoned political pro he’s already learned an important lesson.

“It’s better to pack a small room than have a big hall with empty seats,” said U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-Jackson Heights, during congratulatory remarks at Braunstein’s intimate ceremonial swearing-in on Sunday.

The hall at American Legion Post 123 in Auburndale was standing-room-only with a crowd full of elected officials, city Democratic Party officials, civic leaders and several members of Community Board 11, on which previously served for more than a year.

Braunstein’s constituents were able to rub elbows with a pantheon of political powerhouses that came to pay tribute to the Bayside native at the event, which was moderated by District Leader Carol Gresser.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, Crowley and U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-Forest Hills, recalled their own early days in politics at the swearing-in ceremony.

State Sen. Toby Stavisky, D-Flushing, put the new assemblyman on notice.

“I’m not just a colleague, I’m also a constituent,” Stavisky said in a stern tone, but with a wide smile.

expressed confidence in Braunstein’s ability and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, D-Manhattan, offered some advice:

“The Speaker is always right,” she said, provoking gales of laughter. “Even when they’re wrong, they’re right.”

State Sen. , D-Bayside, dubbed “The Miracle Man” by Schumer for his toppling of 38-year incumbent Frank Padavan to represent northeast Queens District in the Senate, received a round of applause for maintaining his record of “always making the shortest congratulatory remarks.”

He also got a laugh by returning to the lectern to announce, “I expect this to be a precedent for my inauguration next week.”

The ceremony for Avella will take place Jan. 30 at in Bayside.

Braunstein took the oath before Queens District Attorney and former judge Richard Brown, as the assemblyman’s girlfriend, Stephanie Stern, held the Bible.

In his remarks, Braunstein earned enthusiastic applause and admiration for his acknowledgement of a former foe. With a nod toward Sen. Avella, he nevertheless lauded the defeated Republican, .

“While I certainly disagree with many of his policies,” Braunstein said, “Frank Padavan’s constituent service was outstanding and I hope to emulate it.”
