Braunstein Kicks Off Holiday Toy and Clothing Drive

Assemblyman collecting toys for kids affected by Hurricane Sandy and clothing for veterans.

State Assemblyman Edward Braunstein, D-Bayside, is kicking off a holiday drive this week that has been collecting toys for children and clothing for veterans for the past 16 years.

Former state Assemblywoman Ann-Margaret Carrozza founded the drive in 1996. It has been held every year since in northeast Queens.

For the veterans drive, Braunstein said his office is collecting sugar-free candy, slippers, robes, pajamas, sweaters, socks and toiletries for men and women.

This year’s toy drive will be aimed at providing gifts to children who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. All toys must be new and unwrapped.

Gifts can be dropped off at the assemblyman’s office, which is located at 213-33 39th Ave., Suite 238, in Bayside, as well as at Community Board 11, located at 46-21 Little Neck Parkway in Little Neck, or the office of Dr. William Duke, located at 35-01 202nd St. in Bayside.

All donations must be received by Dec. 19. For further information, call the assemblyman’s office at 718-367-3588.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
