Avella to Hold City Tree Policy Forum on Nov. 13

Topics of discussion will include maintenance, the city's trees and sidewalks program and roots damaging sewer systems.

State Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, will host a public forum on the city’s tree policy in Manhattan tomorrow morning.

Avella’s forum, “A Review of New York City Tree Policy,” will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Senate hearing room, which is located on the 19th floor of 250 Broadway.

The senator said the forum is necessary to determine the current state of the city’s tree policy and whether legislation needs to be drafted to address the increasing number of incidents involving city trees that have resulted in a number of injuries and four deaths within the past three years.

During the meeting, the senator will also review other tree-related issues involving the city’s tree and sidewalks program, tree maintenance, the “Million Trees” program and city tree roots penetrating and damaging sewer systems.

The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, park advocates, arborists and community and civic leaders are expected to provide testimony during the hearing.
