Avella Seeks Volunteers for Snow Shoveling Program

Senator will host snow removal for seniors again this winter.

State Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, said his snow removal for seniors program will return this winter.

The senator initiated the program, which matches volunteers with seniors living in their vicinity, last winter in his northeast Queens district.

“Year after year, seniors struggle to clear their sidewalks and remove the snow,” Avella said. “Many seniors are unable to remove the smallest amount of snow and are completely trapped following the larger storms. Unfortunately, they are still responsible for the snow removal in front of their homes and often receive fines from the city for not clearing the snow from their sidewalks.”

The senator, who has stepped up the search for volunteers in the wake of last week’s nor’easter, is now seeking additional Queens residents to take part in the program. Those interested should call his office at 718-357-3094.

Students who take part in the cleanup will receive 10 hours of community service credits.

“These seniors need our help and with one significant snowstorm already in the books, I encourage as many volunteers as possible to participate in this beneficial program.”

This is a great program. I am so thankful that Tony Avella was re-elected.
