Woman Charged in Crash That Claimed Bayside Resident's Life

Nassau county woman was allegedly driving drunk when she crashed into tractor trailer, killing 21-year-old Queens resident.

A Rockville Centre woman has been arraigned on drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter charges after she allegedly crashed into a parked tractor trailer and killed a passenger from Bayside, a spokesman for the Nassau County district attorney said.

Asya Ulmer, 21, was arraigned Monday morning before Judge Eric Bjorneby on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving while under the influence, a spokesman for Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice said.

The defendant, who is due back in court on Sept. 18, could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

Bjorneby set the bail at $20,000 bond or $10,000 cash, the DA spokesman said.

Ulmer was allegedly drunk behind the wheel of a 2000 BMW when she struck a parked tractor trailer near North Center Avenue near Meehan Street just before 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Jennifer Alexis, 21, of Bayside, was in the front passenger seat at the time of the crash. She was reported dead at the scene, Nassau County police said.
