Precinct May Ticket For Leaving Keys In Car

Captain Jason Huerta of the 111th Precinct said a car with two children in the back was recently stolen.

Captain of the said police may begin writing tickets to motorists who leave their car with the keys inside.

"We’re going to be issuing very expensive summonses if you leave your keys in the car," said Huerta on Tuesday evening. He did not get into just how expensive they would be, or when ticketting would be implemented.

Huerta says three cars with keys left inside them were stolen within the precinct in the past month—one with two children still in the car.

Luckily, Huerta said, the thief was "intent on stealing cars, not chilren," so he abandoned both a few blocks from where he picked them up.

Still, he said the precinct may begin an aggressive enforcement campaign to keep other car owners from making the same mistake.
