Police Arrest Man Who Threatened to Jump Off Bayside Roof

Long Island man, 43, allegedly broke into home, climbed onto roof and threatened to jump, police say.

A 43-year-old Long Island man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a Bayside home and climbed onto its roof, a spokesman for the city’s Police Department said.

John Stewart was arrested on a burglary charge after he allegedly broke into a two-story home on Francis Lewis Boulevard near 35th Avenue, the NYPD spokesman said.

The defendant is alleged to have broken into the home, confronted the owner and ran upstairs.

“He tried to climb down a rear window, saw the police and then climbed onto the roof, where he was apprehended,” the police spokesman said.

Stewart is alleged to have threatened to jump off the roof before police talked him down.

A spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said the defendant had not yet been arraigned as of Thursday.

But the NYPD spokesman said Stewart was arrested on a felony charge, which means he would face at least one year in jail if convicted.

The defendant had been sought in several crimes over the weekend in Suffolk County, including car theft and assault.
