Halloran, Smith Lawyers Trying to Get Charges Dismissed

Lawyers for city Councilman Dan Halloran and state Sen. Malcolm Smith are working to get at least some of the charges against their clients dismissed, the Queens Courier wrote Wednesday.

Halloran and Smith were busted on federal conspiracy charges earlier this year amid allegations that they were colluding to fix the 2013 mayoral election. They were charged along with four other men, including Queens Republican Party Vice Chair Vincent Tabone.

The Courier wrote that in a court appearance last week, lawyers for both Smith and Halloran argued to have some of the charges thrown out.

The two men pleaded not guilty in April. Halloran has maintained his innocence since his arrest in April.

Currently, Halloran and Smith could receive a maximum sentence of 45 years in federal prison.
