FDNY Hero Receives City Council Proclamation

Firefighter Antonio Velez is honored for his bravery.

Bayside firefighter Antonio Velez was recognized in a ceremony at his firehouse for rescuing a 12-year-old boy and his pet from a blaze.

Council Member Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, at Engine 320 on Wednesday presented Velez with a City Council proclamation for his heroism.

A veteran of the FDNY since 2004, Valez saved Jesse Iacovetta, along with his cat, Bailey, in January from an early morning fire in their two-story home on 202nd Street.

Still showing burn wounds of the traumatic event, Iacovetta was present, as was his father, Billy Iaccovetta.

"Firefighter Velez’ compassion extended to saving the family cat," said Halloran, adding, "Bayside families should sleep safer knowing they have heroes like Firefighter Velez protecting them.”
