Douglaston's Fairway Raises Nearly $7K to Help Family of Slain Officer

Supermarket chain donates $20K to scholarship fund for daughters of city detective killed in the line of duty.

Douglaston’s Fairway Market raised nearly $7,000 last week for a scholarship fund created to aid the daughters of a city detective killed in the line of duty in December, the supermarket’s executive vice president said.

The grocery chain earned between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. last Thursday at three of its stores to the New York City Police Department’s Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund.

Dan Glickberg, Fairway’s executive vice president, said the chain raised $20,000, of which an estimated $6,800 was earned at its Douglaston Shopping Plaza store.

“We have a long standing history of supporting those who serve New York City and when we saw the tragedy that happened, we felt we had to jump in and help out in any way that we could,” he said of the market’s decision to donate to the scholarship fund. “What’s unique about how we did this is that we involved our customers as well.”

Figoski, 47, who was the father of four daughters between the ages of 14 and 20 years, was killed when he and his partner showed up at the scene of an alleged drug robbery that was taking place in Brooklyn.

Fairway’s Douglaston, Red Hook and Plainview, L.I. stores took part in the Jan. 5 fundraising efforts for Figoski’s family.

Glickberg said the market would likely raise money for local firehouses in a similar manner in the near future.
