Crime Up Four Percent in 111th Precinct So Far This Year

The number of burglaries and grand larcenies are on the rise, according to police statistics.

Crime is up four percent in the 111th Precinct during the first three months of 2012 with slight increases in three of the seven major crime categories, according to police statistics.

The precinct has reported no murders so far this year as opposed to one homicide at this time in 2011.

But there have been two rapes so far, whereas none had been reported at this point last year.

The number of robberies has dropped significantly from 24 incidents at this time in 2011 to nine so far this year.

There have been nine felony assaults in the precinct in 2012. At the end of March last year, 10 had been reported.

But the number of burglaries has risen from 38 incidents in 2011 to 46 so far this year. And grand larceny has gone up from 71 incidents during the first two months of 2011 to 88 incidents this year.

The number of grand larceny auto incidents has dropped slightly from 27 incidents last year to 25 so far this year.

The precinct’s crime statistics through March 18 have been released. Check back with Patch for updated stats through the end of the month.

The 111th Precinct covers Douglaston, Bayside and Little Neck.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
