Crime Up Five Percent in 2012, According to 111th Precinct Stats

There has been an increase in four of the seven major crime categories, but no murders so far this year.

Crime continues to remain up slightly in the 111th Precinct during the first four months of 2012 with slight increases in four of the seven major crime categories, according to police statistics.

The precinct has reported no murders so far this year as opposed to one homicide at this time in 2011.

There have been two rapes so far, whereas one had been reported at this point last year.

The number of robberies is down significantly from 28 incidents at this time in 2011 to 14 so far this year.

But there have been 17 felony assaults in the precinct in 2012. At the end of April last year, 16 had been reported.

The number of burglaries is also slightly up from 58 incidents in 2011 at this time to 62 so far this year.

Grand larceny has risen from 105 incidents in 2011 at the end of April to 122 incidents this year.

And there has been a slight uptick in grand larceny auto incidents, from 39 last year to 45 so far in 2012.

Crime is up five percent overall for the year.

The precinct has released its crime statistics through April 22. Check back with Patch for updated stats through the end of the month.

The 111th Precinct covers Douglaston, Little Neck and Bayside.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
