Crime Plunges in 111th Precinct During July

The number of incidents is down 35 percent from the same period of time in 2011.

Crime dropped significantly in the during the past month as the number of incidents dipped in six of the seven major crime categories, according to police statistics.

As of July 22, overall crime for the year is down three percent.

But the number of incidents in July is down 35 percent from reported crimes during the same period in 2011.

There were no murders or rapes during the past month, while robberies fell from seven incidents in July 2011 to four this past month.

The number of burglaries dropped from 14 incidents in July 2011 to 11 during the same period of time this year.

Grand larceny dipped from 38 incidents in 2011 to 21 incidents in July 2012, while grand larceny auto fell from nine incidents in July 2011 to seven this past month.

Felony assault was the only category that rose slightly. Two incidents were reported during July 2011, while three occurred during the same period of time this year.

For the year so far, the number of murders, rapes, robberies and burglaries are down, while felony assaults, grand larceny and grand larceny auto incidents are up.

The 111th Precinct covers Douglaston, Little Neck and Bayside.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
