Crime Down for January in 111th Precinct

The number of incidents drops 10 percent during the first month of 2013, according to police statistics.

Crime was down 10 percent in the 111th Precinct during the first month of 2013 following a spike in incidents in December, according to police statistics.

The number of robberies in the precinct was up in January, but the number of incidents was down in the six other major crime categories.

At Monday’s Community Board 11 meeting, 111th Capt. Jason Huerta said that several arrests had been made in a series of recent robberies.

A total six incidents were reported last month as opposed to only one robbery during January 2012.

There were no murders or rapes in the precinct during the first month of 2013.

The number of felony assaults fell from five in January 2012 to three this past month.

A total 16 burglaries were reported during the first month of 2012, while 15 occurred during January 2013.

Grand larceny is down slightly so far in 2013. In January 2012, a total 32 incidents were reported. This year, 28 incidents have taken place in the precinct.

And grand larceny auto is down from 12 incidents during the first month of 2012 to seven incidents in January 2013.

The dip in incidents follows a peak in December, during which crime was up 57 percent. But crime was only up four percent for the entire year, according to police statistics.

The precinct’s crime statistics covered the month through Jan. 27.

The 111th Precinct covers Bayside, Douglaston and Little Neck.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
