Crime Down 28 Percent in 28-Day Period in 111th Precinct

The number of incidents in all of the crime categories - with the exception of burglaries - is down, according to police statistics.

Crime was down a whopping 28 percent in the 111th Precinct during the past month as the number of incidents dropped in six of the seven major crime categories, according to police statistics.

As of Sept. 16, overall crime for the year is down six percent.

There were no murders or rapes during the past month and robberies fell from eight incidents in late August to mid-September in 2011 to four during the same period of time this year.

Grand larceny went down from 28 incidents during August and September 2011 to 20 incidents this past month. And the number of felony assaults fell from eight incidents last year to one assault during the same period of time in 2012.

Grand larceny auto fell from 12 incidents during the 28-day period in 2011 to five this year.

Burglary was the only category to see a slight increase. In late August through mid-September 2011, a total 17 incidents were reported, whereas 22 incidents occurred during the same period of time this year.

For the year so far, the number of murders, rapes, robberies, burglaries, felony assaults and grand larceny auto incidents are down, while the number of grand larcenies is up just slightly.

The 111th Precinct covers Douglaston, Little Neck and Bayside.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
