Burglaries up slightly, police say

Recent tire and rim thefts, traffic concerns top police agenda

The latest in a string of rim and tire thefts capped off a mostly quiet week in the 111th Precinct, which covers Little Neck, Douglaston, Bayside and Oakland Gardens.

The theft was discovered and reported to police at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3. The victim reported four rims and tires missing after parking her car in her driveway overnight on 255th Street in Little Neck, police said.

At a monthly meeting of the 111th Precinct Community Council on Nov. 4, Police Captain Tommy Ng tried to get the word out to residents about the string of incidents involving the removal of rims and tires from vehicles parked in the area.

Police reported a slight increase in burglaries, such as the recent tire thefts, in the precinct so far this year.

In other business at the community meeting, police addressed the issue of enforcement of what on Little Neck Parkway near the Long Island Railroad at-grade crossing.

Residents are calling for additional No Stopping signs on the traffic corridor near Little Neck station, as well as the reinstallation of a No U-turn sign at the intersection.

According to Ng, traffic safety officers were conducting a survey of the intersection during non-peak, peak and weekend hours. Police have begun issuing citations for violations of existing rules, Ng said.

Also at last week's meeting, Ng described the police response to a report of a car vs. building incident at in Little Neck Plaza.

According to Ng, the Oct. 27 incident happened when a motorist stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake in the Little Neck Plaza parking lot, causing her car to crash into the front of the kosher market. There were no injuries.

No charges against the driver will be filed, Ng said.
