Family Talk: Ashton Kutcher Files for Divorce

Ashton Kutcher files for divorce from Demi Moore just before the holidays.

Is there such a thing as "filing for divorce etiquette"?

In a report by the NY Daily News, Ashton Kutcher decided to finalize his year-long separation from Demi Moore by filing for divorce just days before Christmas.

Moore's holiday package arrived just after more news depicted her continued questionable behavior, "giving out lap dances" at a recent Chanel beach party.

While the filing doesn't come as a surprise, the timing, on the other hand, does.

Filing for divorce during the holiday season seems to have an added blow to the whole situation, which leaves me wondering if such a notion as etiquette can, or should, come into play when it comes to such emotionally charged matters.

Should there be a set of societal standards with regards to behavior when it comes to divorce?

The dissolution of a marriage is hard enough to deal with without adding to all that goes into the process. Filing for divorce days before Christmas and during the holiday season in general is not only in poor taste and judgment, but can be considered nothing but calculated.

It's no accident that Kutcher filed for divorce at the time that he did.

In a Huffington Post article, "Should I File For Divorce Before or After The Holidays?", several possible reasons are given for filing before and after the holidays, the majority of which do not apply to Kutcher and Demi.

The article outlines a few reasons for holding off until after the holidays, primarily for those families with kids involved.

Reasons for filing before the holidays include not wanting to be around the spouse or his/her family for the holiday season as well as possible ways the timeframe may affect the divorce.

With Kutcher and Moore not having any kids together, there is no practical reasons to wait until after the holidays. However, with couple having been separated for just over a year, there is no apparent reason why Kutcher waited until now to file.

It seems the old saying "all's fair in love and war" holds true in this situation, and we can see that latter is at the forefront of what may be coming to pass between Kutcher and Moore.
