Two NYC Based Events Helping Typhoon Haiyan Victims this Week

It’s been a little over a month since Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines, killing thousands and leaving a great number destitute and struggling.

About four million people have been displaced and a little over 200 thousand are in evacuation centers according to a report earlier this month by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the Philippines.

Today two events mobilized by Filipino-Americans in New York are collecting money to help typhoon victims: the start of an online sale of designer wares and the premiere of a play in the city.

This comes on the the heels of recent events organized by members of Filipino-Americans cultural community to help with the relief effort. Those events include a special showing of the acclaimed musical, "Here Lies Love" and the Bliss Out at Topaz!, a performance fundraiser last month.

A Holiday Sale for Typhoon Relief:

The Filipino American Museum, a roving museum that recently hosted the 'Gathering the Grassroots 2013' event in the Queens Museum, is launching an online sale to help typhoon victims today and closes on December 23rd at 11:59pm.

The selection of designer wares is being sold at 20 percent off their retail price. They include brands like Hood by Air, Y-3, VFiles, and about 30 others labels. The proceeds will go to LIFESAVER Systems: Philippine Disaster Appeal, which is trying to provide clean water to the victims.

Last month, the museum organized a fundraiser to benefit the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) at  Dumbo’s Galapagos Art Space.

NYC Premiere of "Nanay, Tatay, Anak":

Renee Floresca, an actress who took part in this year's "Tagalogue" performance for October’s Filipino American History Month, tells the story of a Filipino-American family and the issues that arise from a father’s meth addiction.

The play, entitled "Nanay, Tatay, Anak", which translates from tagalog into ‘Mother, Father, Child,’  is based partly from her life experience and touches on themes of fidelity, miscommunication, and generational conflict. It is making its first New York City  premiere at the Roy Arias Studios & Theaters after originally showing in California.

Twenty percent of its ticket sales on Friday and Saturday will go to The Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) Relief Fund Campaign. Also, a special free show on Saturday will be accepting donation for (STP).
