The map above shows a snapshot of how many women are diagnosed with breast cancer across New York City.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in New York State and it is estimated that one in eight women will develop it.

The data above is from the NYS Department of Health and shows the number of women breast cancer cases between 2005-2009 by zipcode. The redder the shade the more women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer in that area. Click on the map to find out more.

In New York City alone, about 1,260 women die from it every year and 23 percent of women 40 and older have not had a mammogram recently.

Women are recommended to get a mammogram every year after the age of 40. Since 2000, preventative screenings and hormone replacement therapy have contributed to a decrease in cancer incidence rates.
