Volunteers Needed to Upgrade Catharine Turner Richardson Park on May 19

Garden club will weed and plant a tree as part of 'It's My Park Day.'

The Douglaston Garden Club is seeking volunteers to help clean up for May 19’s “It’s My Park Day.”

Club members and volunteers will meet at the park, which is located at the intersection of Douglaston Parkway, 42nd Avenue and 240th Street, at 10 a.m.

Volunteers will weed behind the park’s hydrangeas and plant a flowering dogwood the club received through the city’s Million Trees initiative at the top of the park’s stairs.

“Since we started this project seven years ago, we’ve been reclaiming the park,” Garden Club President Douglas Montgomery said of the annual upgrading event. “The park is becoming more heavily used.”

The event, which will run until 3 p.m., is being simultaneously with the garden club’s bake sale fundraiser at 40-60 Douglaston Parkway.

“May is our biggest month for getting money for maintenance for the park,” Montgomery said.

The bake sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers for “It’s My Park Day” should bring their own gloves and gardening tools.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
