Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Check out this list of tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

It’s likely to be a hot Fourth of July weekend, which means a number of residents across the five boroughs will likely want to take a dip in the pool.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has released a list of swimming pool safety tips for parents and children.

First, never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch children closely around all bodies of water. Designate a water watcher to supervise children while they are in the pool.

A parent should not be reading, texting or using a smartphone while kids are in the pool.

Secondly, teach children basic water safety tips and keep them away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.

Thirdly, have a telephone close by when you or your family are using a pool. If a child is missing, look for them first in the pool.

Teach your children how to swim and try to learn how to perform CPR. Understand the basics of life saving, so that you can assist in a pool emergency.

Ensure that your personal pool has drain covers that comply with federal standards and, if you do not know, ask your pool service provider whether your covers are in compliance.

Have lifesaving equipment, such as life rings, floats or a reaching pole, available and easily accessible.
