Belly Dancing Fundraiser for Cancer to Be Held at Samuel Field Y

Event will provide support to nonprofit that helps cancer patients with exercise.

The will provide space for a belly dancing event next week to raise money for a nonprofit that helps patients fight cancer through exercise.

"Shimmies for Life" will take place on May 20 at the Y, which is located at 58-20 Little Neck Parkway. The two-hour show, which will kick off at 1 p.m., will feature 20 belly dancers performing cabaret, tribal and fusion dances with props, including fan, veils and swords.

The event will raise money for Strength for Life, a Port Jefferson Station-based nonprofit that encourages cancer patients to battle their disease through exercise.

"I love performing at fundraisers and nursing homes so much that I thought it would be a great idea to have a fundraiser of my own," said Mishaal, a dancer, instructor and organizer for Shimmies for Life. "Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for Strength for Life so that they continue providing exercise equipment, classes and retreats to cancer patients and survivors. I feel very blessed to have such beautiful dancers dedicate their time and talents to such a wonderful organization."

Tickets, which are $20, include admission to the show, complimentary food and beverages donated by local businesses, Zumba demonstrations and raffle prizes.

Northeast Queens businesses will also set up booths selling products, including belly dancing clothing, jewelry and arts and crafts.

For more information or to purchase tickets, call 516-341-2180 or visit Shimmies for Life's website.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
