Nine Farms Participating in This Year's Greenmarket

GrowNYC's website provides a list of the vendors taking part in Douglaston's market in 2012.

City nonprofit GrowNYC has updated its website for the to include the list of nine vendors that will take part in this year’s market near the community’s Long Island Rail Road station.

This year’s market, which is located at 41st Avenue and 235th Street in Douglaston Village, will operate from July 8 to Nov. 18.

It will open every Sunday at 8 a.m. and close at 3 p.m.

This year’s participating farmers include American Seafood, a Suffolk County fish and shellfish vendor, as well as Ulster County’s Bread Alone Bakery, Mercer County’s DiPaola Turkeys and Cherry Grove Farm, a Mercer County vendor that sells cheese and lamb.

Vegetable sellers include Delaware County’s Lucky Dog Farm, Hartford’s Newgate Farm and Nolasco’s Farm, a New Jersey operation that also sells Mexican specialty produce and herbs.

The Orchards of Concklin, of Rockland County, will sell fruit, plants and baked goods, while Sullivan County’s Wildcraft Farms will offer chicken, beef, duck, turkey, Cornish and guinea hens and eggs.

The greenmarket will include cooking demonstrations, seasonal celebrations and other activities during the five months it is open this year.

Douglaston Garden Club President Douglas Montgomery, who led the initiative to draw the greenmarket to the community, said the garden club has teamed up with Staples to operate a battery recycling station every week at the market.

He said he believes the market is a means of drawing the community together.

"I think it's something we will grow in the neighborhood," he said. "Last year was successful, but we want to get the word out more so it becomes more of a community thing. It's more than just a market. It's a means of socialization. People who haven't seen each other for six months catch up at the greenmarket."

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
