Lions Club to Honor Garden Club President at November Ceremony

Douglas Montgomery will receive Man of the Year award for his work with CB 11, garden club and P.S. 98's PTA.

The Douglaston Garden Club’s president said he would be honored as “Man of the Year” by the this fall.

Douglas Montgomery, the club’s president as well as a local realtor and member of , will receive one of the Lions Club’s three annual awards during a Nov. 18 dinner and ceremony at a yet-to-be-disclosed site in northeast Queens.

“It’s nice to be recognized, but I do it because I live in a great neighborhood and I want it to be better,” Montgomery said.

The Lions Club will also present awards for Woman of the Year and Lion of the Year, but the group has not yet announced their picks for 2012.

Montgomery said the group chose to honor him for his work with the garden club as well as his acting as the vice president of ’s Parent Teacher Association and sitting on CB 11.

“We planted 500 daffodil bulbs on P.S. 98’s property last fall,” Montgomery said of the garden club. “And we donated loads of compost to fill in the garden beds.”

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
