Halloran to Host Free Mammograms

Councilman's office will offer free breast cancer screenings on Dec. 17.

Breast Cancer Awareness month may be over, but that doesn't mean women over age 40 shouldn't still consider getting screened.

Next weekend, Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, will offer free mammograms for all women between the ages of 40 and 70.

The free exams will be performed at the councilman's office, located at 166-08 24th Road in Whitestone, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 17.

"Pro-active measures, such as mammograms, are the best way to save lives," Halloran said.

According to studies, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women as well as the most common cancer, excluding skin cancers.

Thanks to advanced breast screening techniques and improved treatment options, the mortality rate for women with breast cancer has dropped to three percent.

"By detecting cancer early, you greatly increase your chance of survival," Halloran said.

The councilman encouraged all women within the "at-risk" age bracket to get screened.

"The screenings are free, though an appointment is required," he said.

And for those women who can't make it on Dec. 17, Councilman Halloran plans to host the same event on Feb. 26.

"I highly encourage all women in the targeted age range to consider making an appointment for one of these dates for their health," he said.

To make an appointment, call the councilman's office at (718) 631-6703.
