Douglaston Residents Turn Out for Mega Yard Sale

Douglaston residents didn’t allow Saturday’s rainy afternoon prevent them from finding bargain treasures during the community’s .

A total 25 homes participated in the Douglas Manor sale, which included sites along West Drive, Arleigh Road, Warwick Avenue and a number of other neighborhood streets.

Beth Dulberg set up a table on the lawn of her neighbors – John and Rebecca Gellos – along Ardsley Road to sell house ware, toys and picture frames.

“I’ve never done this before – it’s fun,” she said. “People have been coming by looking for jewelry, which is the one thing I don’t have.”

The Gellos’s, who also took part in the yard sale for the first time, sold a variety of items, including books, toys, glassware, clothing and paintings.

Participating homes paid a $25 fee to take part in the sale.

Carol Panagi, a member in charge of the event, said money collected from the fees would be allocated to the and other local environmental initiatives.

Ara Chekmayan, who has taken part in the yard sale for the past two years, said he believed the gloomy weather and light rain had possibly led to lighter turnout than in previous years.

“So far, the weather is not as good and there are not as many houses participating,” he said.

Cathy Fucci, a South Shore resident, said she made the trek to Douglas Manor to find jewelry and other discount items.

“I love garage sales,” she said. “I’m looking for vintage jewelry. They have really nice things here.”
