Douglaston Residents See Restored Street Names as Symbolic Victory

Community members do not believe new names will greatly impact real estate, postal service.

Douglaston residents and realtors said they believed Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s recent was a symbolic victory for the community.

But they did not believe it would have much of an effect on property values or postal service.

On Monday, the mayor signed into law a bill proposed by Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, to – Orient Avenue, Prospect Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, Church Street, Pine Street and Poplar Street.

“I think it’s symbolic, but it also brings back the history of the area,” said Douglas Montgomery, of . “It just goes to solidify that Douglaston has a lot of character and history.”

Montgomery said he believed the only potential impact caused by the street name changes could be confusion from the local post office.

“The problem we’ve always had is that there is no post office in Douglaston,” he said. “It could be confusing finding out what the addresses are. Mailings in Douglaston are often addressed to Little Neck or Flushing.”

Dan Cobotic lives on 242nd Street between 43rd and 44th Avenues, which will soon become Hamilton Avenue.

“We heard about it, but we don’t have much information,” he said of the street name changes. “I don’t think it will have any effect on us.”

Addresses for residents living on the streets will automatically be updated with their local post offices.

And emergency responders will recognize both the numbered street addresses as well as the new ones once they take effect.

Halloran said the city’s Department of Finance will assign the new addresses when the proposal goes into effect, which the councilman expects could happen within a few months.

He also said he did not see any direct impact on property values, although the new addresses make the community sound “a little more quaint and homey.”

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
