Bayside Anglers to Host Bay Cleanup

Group hopes to draw more than 200 volunteers to pick up trash along northeast Queens shoreline.

The Bayside Anglers will host their 18th annual cleanup along Little Neck Bay’s shoreline on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day.

Peter Pabon, the group’s president, said he estimates that more than 200 northeast Queens residents could turn out to lend a hand along a three-mile stretch of the shore.

“We live on an island and people take that for granted,” he said. “Our water is cleaner now than it has been for 100 years. There are lots of fish in the water that are edible. But anything people drop on the ground will end up in the water.”

Volunteers at the event will primarily pick up plastics, such as bottles, but also the occasional discarded bicycle or tires, Pabon said.

“These things get tossed around during winter storms and deposited in the nooks and crannies of our rocky shore,” he said.

The cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. and will last until noon. Then, the volunteers will regroup at Little Bay Park for a free lunch of hero sandwiches and soda. The Anglers will then hold a raffle of items donated by its membership, local businesses and fishing suppliers.

All ages are welcome to attend.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, boots or footwear to prevent slipping on rocks or paper grabbers.

There will be three sign-in booths. Here are directions for all three:

1. Joe Michaels Mile (Bicycle Path): Cross Island Parkway to Northern Boulevard West. Go a half-mile and make a right onto Bell Blvd. Continue about one mile and make a right onto 35th Avenue. Bear left and park at the end. A footbridge to the bicycle path is up the hill opposite Crocheron Pond.

2. Bayside Marina: Cross Island Parkway to Northern Boulevard West. Go about a half-mile and make a right onto Bell Blvd. Continue about a mile-and-a-half and make a right onto 28th Avenue. Continue to the end and park on the street. A footbridge to the marina is at the end of the block.

3. Little Bay Park: Cross Island Parkway North to Exit 32 (Bell Boulevard). Then, make a right at the light into Little Bay Park. Park in the lot on the left.
