APEC to Host Penny Social Fundraiser on July 22

Attendees will be able to purchase tickets and win baskets of a variety of donated items.

Northeast Queens residents will be able to win everything from perfumes to wine and cheese at a low price during ’s upcoming Tricky Tray Penny Social Fundraiser.

The center, located at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston, has been hosting the fundraiser for at least 10 years, APEC’s Executive Director Irene Scheid said.

“It’s not one of our major fundraisers, but it’s a fun one,” she said. “We give away items that were donated to the center.”

Money raised during the July 22 event goes back into APEC’s wildlife programs, such as a live animal program at 2 p.m. on July 21 that will include snakes, frogs, insects and an alligator.

Scheid said the center takes the items donated for the Tricky Tray fundraiser and creates baskets filled with items =, including perfume, sewing items, wine and cheese.

A total 200 items are placed on a table with a numbered cup in front of them during the event.

Attendees will buy a sheet of tickets and place a ticket in the cup of an item in which they are interested. Then, the numbers are picked out of the cups and prizes are given away.

The cost to attend the event is $12, which includes one sheet of tickets. Then, participants will be able to purchase additional sheets of 20 tickets for a few dollars.

The event will also include light refreshments, such as coffee, tea and cake.
