APEC to Host Earth Science, Astronomy Courses in May

Douglaston environmental center will also teach attendees to make compost bins and offer nature reading course for kids next month.

Alley Pond Environmental Center’s May programs include an earth science prep class, an astronomy discussion and a compost bin-making course.  

The center will offer an earth science regents prep course from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on May 5 and 19 as well as June 2.  

The class will be hosted by Mark Freilich, a licensed earth science teacher with an 85 percent passing rate on regents. There will be preparation for the lab practical portion of the test and two sessions for the written part. Students will also learn how to use reference tables.  

The course is limited to 10 students, who must sign up for all three sessions at $70 per class.  

APEC will also host an astronomy series for high school and college students on April 21, May 5 and 19 and June 9 and 23.  

The class, which costs $65, will cover a variety of topics, such as the scale of the cosmos, cycles of the moon, star properties and evolution, black holes, galaxies, solar systems, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity and life in the universe.  

The program is limited to 12 participants.  

The center will hold “Spring Into Spring” from 10:30 a.m. to noon on May 4. This class, which is aimed at 3- and 4-year-olds, will include a discussion on ways to save the earth.  

Attendees will meet live animals, make a craft and take a nature walk. The course, which is limited to 10 participants, costs $18 per child.  

On May 18, APEC will teach attendees, ages 9 years and above, how to make their own compost bin. The course, which will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., costs $24 per person.  

The workshop will include an afternoon of learning about the water and plant cycles as well as a nature hike. Registration is limited to 10 participants.  

The environmental center’s Novels in Nature course will be held on May 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 years will be able to listen to nature-related stories about trees and make crafts.  

The event will include a snack and a trail walk. It is limited to 10 participants.
