APEC's July Programs Include Astronomy and Animal Care Training

Douglaston environmental center will host three classes, including one on owl pellets, this month.

will offer classes on owls, animal care training and astronomy in July.

On July 8, the center will host Young Discoverers – Owl Pellets, a program during which children, ages 8 to 12, will be able to see what an owl pellet looks like and discover what the bird had been eating.

Class size is limited, so reservations are suggested. The class, which is $24 per child, will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Local children will be able to learn about the universe on July 14 with astronomer Mark Freilich during The Summer Sky in July: An Evening with the Stars.

The program, which runs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., will teach children about the features of the moon, the Milky Way, the Red Giant Antares and Scorpio, the double star Albeiro and the summer triangle.

It will also include an indoor lecture on basic astronomy and an outdoor viewing with a professional telescope.

Tickets for the program are $12 per person and $7 for children, ages 7 to 12.

Attendees should bring insect repellent.

The center, located at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston, will hold animal care trainee sessions from 10 a.m. to noon on July 24 and 29.

This program, which is $21 per child, will teach youths to care for APEC’s animals.

The class, which is meant for ages 8 to 12, will teach children how to be caretakers for the animals through tasks such as feeding, brushing, cleaning and learning about their needs.

At the end of the program, attendees will receive an animal care trainee certificate. Class size is limited.
