American Cancer Society Honors Douglaston Teacher

Jo-Ann Maggio is given a plaque for coordinating a Hicksville high school's Relay for Life.

The American Cancer Society recently honored a Douglaston teacher for coordinating a “Relay for Life” at a Long Island high school.

Jo-Ann Maggio was given the “Volunteer for Hope Award” by the society on March 27 for her leading role in coordinating the relay at Hicksville’s Holy Trinity High School.

Maggio, who lives in Douglaston, is a teacher and Volunteer Club moderator.

The school, which was also given a plaque by the cancer society, raised a total $7,000 for the relay, a spokeswoman for the school said.
