Enjoy the Belmont Stakes with Cool Summer Cocktails in Hand!

The Belmont Stakes is the third leg of the Triple Crown in horse racing. The 144th running of the event takes place right here in Queens on Saturday, June 10th at 6:30pm.

Bourbon Street's Bartender, Cindy, who is an avid horse racing fan, will be stirring up some special cocktails for the event.  She has created the "Belmont Breeze" and places a spin on the classic Mint Julep by adding a splash of Pomegranate. There is no better time to gather with friends for a cool cocktail and enjoy the race!

Below are the recipes for the these cocktails to enjoy on the Big Day, or any day you feel like sipping on a Summertime imbibe!

  • The Belmont Breeze
  • 1.5 Oz Malibu liqueur
  • 2 Oz Pineapple juice
  • 2 Oz Cranberry juice
  • Orange

Fill your glass with ice, pour Malibu, then the juices, stir with a bar spoon garnish with Orange slice.

TIP: Always try to use fresh juices, it makes a big difference, cranberry juice is very hard to make so use a premium brand like ocean spray.

If you shake the drink, the pineapple will make an amazing white foam and your drink will look even better.

The Pomegranate Mint Julep

  • 3 Oz bourbon (Always prefer a premium Bourbon or Tennessee Whisky, I prefer Wild Turkey or Maker's Mark)
  • 1 Spoon white sugar
  • Hand full of fresh Mint leaves
  • 4 Drops of bitters (always try to use Angostura bitters)
  • Splash of club soda
  • Splash of Fresh Pomegranate Juice
  • Lime Cordial (or Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice)
  • 8 Ice cubes or crushed ice

Muddle the mint and sugar, until you actually smell the mint.  Add 3 Oz. of Bourbon. Add the Bitters. Add the splash of Pomegranate Juice.  Stir ten times. Add 8 ice cubes. Shake it hard! (twenty times at least) Strain into the glass full of fresh new ice. Top the drink with club soda. Add five fresh new mint leaves on top and serve it. Your perfect Mint Julep is ready to drink!   Enjoy!

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
