We may have already passed the unofficial end of summer, but peach season is in full swing.
Farmers markets throughout the boroughs are fully stocked with the fuzzy fruit and should be till September’s end. The recipe below, inspired from Better Homes and Gardens, combines the perfect blend of melding season - sweet juicy summer peaches and warm fall spices.
4 ripe medium peaches, sliced and peeled
2 teaspoons of sugar (optional)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon freshly grated orange rind
½ teaspoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon whole cloves
Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan and cook at low heat until the peaches are soft, or bake covered at 350 degrees F for five to 10 minutes until warm.
Peaches contain a total of 10 different vitamins and a healthy dose of potassium, great for maintaining good blood pressure. One large peach provides vitamins A, C, E, and K, making it a great antioxidant.
With a total prep time of 15 minutes, it’s also an easy-to-make dessert. Better Homes and Gardens suggests serving with sprigs of fresh basil or mint on top for aesthetics and flavor. Enjoy!
