Week in Review: Fire Engines, the Music Zoo and the Story of Scobee Diner

A look back at the notable events of the past week.

For most of us, the weekend isn't technically over, but we can still take this time to look back at the big news that happened in the last week.

On Monday, we found out that Engine 306, along with 20 other firehouses facing closure to balance the city budget, will stay open. The funds will come from savings from the 2011 budget, leading some to believe that the threats to the firehouses were simply a scare tactic.

We also discovered that the Music Zoo will be moving its business up the road to Roslyn. If you're looking for a good deal on a high-end guitar, Music Zoo's moving sale may be all the incentive you need.

On Tuesday, we learned that Little Neck may have have to endure the site of the empty shell of the former Scobee Diner for awhile longer, as the building (and surrounding property) appears to be locked in a stalemate of complicated ownership issues.

If you were thinking of swimming, you'd do well to hit the waves somewhere other than Douglas Manor Beach and Whitestone Beach - both locations are reportedly plagued by levels of bacteria too high for safe swimming.

It's been more than a week since the Senate passed legislation enabling same-sex couples to marry. Though the New York City wedding industry may have hit it big, most Little Neck retailers we spoke with said they don't expect a major spike in business.
