Big Apple ranks first in five categories and last in four others.

Frank Skala, a long-time Community Board 11 member and civic leader, said he does not believe his fellow New Yorkers to be unfriendly.

“It’s a bunch of nonsense,” he said. “I’ve been to all 50 states and everyone has a different style. People here will hold the door and say ‘thank you.’ They are mostly polite.”

Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, also said he believes the poll gives the city's denizens an unnecessarily bad rep.

"While New Yorkers might be a little rough around the edges, we're plenty nice once you get to know us," he said.
