Snow Blankets Territory from New York to Alabama

Douglaston Patch Contributor Reports Accumulation in an Unexpected Place

For only the second time in the last hundred years or more, snow blanketed the deep south on Christmas Day.

Approximately four inches of the white stuff fell on Huntsville, Alabama, the home of NASA's  Marshal Space Flight Center. According to published reports, the local airport was virtually shut down as hundreds of flights bound for the eastern seaboard were cancelled. Roads and bridges were closed, small local markets nearly sold out of milk, soda and other neccessities. In some nearby counties, this was the first Christmas snowfall since weather records began being kept in the late 1800s.

Kids got the White Christmas memory of a lifetime; they and snowmen in Santa hats braved freezing weather on many front lawns, as flurries continued into Sunday evening.
