Queens County Farm Museum Takes Part in Preservation Competition

Northeast Queens farm is one of 40 sites in the five boroughs that could receive funding for upgrades.

The Queens County Farm Museum is taking part in a grant competition that is giving away a total $3 million to preserve historic sites around the five boroughs.

American Express's Partners in Preservation contest includes 40 historic sites in New York City, including the New York Botanical Garden, Flushing Town Hall, Apollo Theater, Guggenheim Museum, Astoria Pool and the Queens County Farm Museum.

To vote for an historic site to receive funding, participants must first log in at the Partners in Preservation website. But a person can vote for the same site once per day through May 21.

Kristin Allocco, a spokeswoman for the Queens County Farm, said the northeast Queens museum would use the money for upgrades if it wins the competition.

"If we win, we'll receive funding to restore our farmhouse," Allocco said.

Participants can also "like" the farm museum on Facebook and then hit the vote button on the site.

The farm has been in continual use since 1697, making it the oldest of its kind in New York City.
