Playing in a Winter Wonderland

NYC Parks to Host Fun, Free Winter Snow Activities for the Youth of Queens

The blizzard has ended, but the fun is just beginning with New Yorkers heading to city parks to make the best of things in the freezing afternoon sun.

New York City Parks & Recreation will host "Snow Days" throughout the five boroughs on Monday, providing local youngsters with the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of supervised outdoor recreation.

The "Snow Day" site in Queens will be at Juniper Valley Park at 78th Street and Juniper Valley North  between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parks will provide sleds for wintertime fun.

"That's what I love about this city," said Queens native Jacqueline Rey. "They're always coming up with fun things for us to do."

"Snow Day" will also offer snowman and snow angel contests, lots of friendly snowball fights, music as well as complimentary hot chocolate, with the Urban Park Rangers providing winter walks and nature activities for the kids.

But not everyone was planning to make there way over to Juniper Valley on Monday.

"Once I'm done digging out, I'm going to head back inside and hunker down for the rest of the evening," said John Stevens, who'd been shoveling since 9 a.m. "I have to be at work early tomorrow to make up for today."

Still, Rey was quick to encourage everyone in the area to join her in her quest to enjoy the holiday snow while it lasts.

So dust off those snowshoes, Little Neck, and head out to the nearest park to enjoy this lovely snow day courtesy of last night's blizzard.
