Pink And The City

List of some upcoming pink events taking place around New York City this October.

Last year, the White House in Washington, D.C., had a pink glow, people painted their pumpkins pink in Calvert, Md., and women in Orange City, Florida, donated art made of bras.

In Pennsylvania, first lady Susan Corbett turned the fountain pink in Harrisburg, for the entire month, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

And, of course, let’s not forget the high heel races going on around the world in support of breast cancer awareness, like the Stiletto Stampede for the Cure in Houston.

Well this year is shaping up to be just as big, with lots of colorful events taking place around the city, and borough.

In fact, John Link, director of the Queens chapter of the American Cancer Society, announced that tens of thousands of people will likely take part in the 11th Annual Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park on Oct. 16.

“It’s one of our bigger events we put on out of our office. Last year, we had close to 10,000 participants and raised more than $800,000 dollars,” Link said.

In addition to this walk, there'll also be tons of runs around the country and county, like marathons, and a plethora of exercise-related activities.

Then there are tea parties, luncheons, golf tournaments, masquerade balls, art shows, motor-cross, motorcycle rides and concerts, to choose from.

Some more notable events include:

  • Wild Women of Comedy Breast Cancer Fundraiser – Oct. 1 – Bellmore
  • Breast Cancer Gala: The Artrageous Affair - Oct. 1 - Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester
  • LAX for Hope Women’s Lacrosse Tournament – Oct. 2. Oakdale
  • 2nd Annual NYC Breast Cancer Fundraiser – Oct. 6 – NYC
  • TREK Women Breast Cancer Awareness Ride - Oct. 8 - Monroe County

With so much going on around the city, and surrounding area, it's safe to say there will be many people helping to raise awareness about Breast Cancer this year.

“Clearly, every person who brings attention to the cause is fantastic,” said Terry Music, chief mission delivery officer for the American Cancer Society.
