Celebrate Earth Day with the Entire Family in Queens

This week, give back to our planet and celebrate these Earth Day events in your community. 

Alley Pond Environmental Center - Tree and Shrub Planting

Date: April 30, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The environmental center combines Earth Day and Arbor Day into one event by planting trees and shrubs in Alley Pond Park. Trees are provided but participants are encouraged to bring a native shrub with them.

All volunteers are welcome. However, if you plan on bringing your child, make sure they are at least seven years old.  For more information or to become a volunteer, call Alley Pond at 718-229-4000

Green for Queens Earth Day Fair

Date: April 25, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Head to Forest Hills for a day of earth friendly activities. Adults can take advantage of workshops that covers topics from greening your home and workplace to healthy cleaning products and composting for apartments. Children can try their hand at making seed necklaces and sundial watches. Healthy snacks will be provided for all.

Make sure to bring your old cell phones and rechargeable batteries. The Earth Fair will be collecting these items to be recycled. Staff will be on hand to assist with a clean wind energy initiative, so bring along your Con Edison bill if you are interested.

Clean Up Day at New Hyde Park Village Town Hall.

Date: April 23, 10 a.m.

Join the city of New Hyde Park’s beautification committee at Village Hall to help clean up. Volunteers will meet in the hall's parking lot, located at 1420 Jericho Turnpike.

Make Earth Day Every Day: Be a Compost Hero

Date: April 14 3:30 p.m.

The Pomonok Public Library, located at 158-21 Jewel Ave. in Flushing, is hosting the perfect event to get kids, ages six to 12, thinking green. The session will include a lesson on composting and will feature the use of garbage in the library’s own homemade compost creation, including worms and all!.

2nd Annual Queens Earth Day Fair

Date: May 15, 1 - 4p.m.

Spend the day at the Queens Earth Day fair, where kids can enjoy the Wild Life Children’s Theater, worm composting, edible ecosystems, snakes and lizards, cooking for kids and much more.

For the adults, workshops and exhibits on energy, saving money and global warming have been arranged. Learn how you can reduce energy and water use, compost in an apartment, and get clean wind energy. Find out about Queens food co-ops, community gardens, healthy cleaning products, biking and lots more

Anna Lappe, bestselling author and public speaker, will be on-hand to discuss the impacts of food choices on climate change.  

Also, bring in your last 12 months of utility bills with you to the Earth Day Fair and sign up for free energy audits, which can include free CFL light bulbs, water bottles and reusable shopping bags.

If you have old clothes, shoes, cell phones or rechargeable batteries lying around, bring those in as well to be recycled.
