NYC Needs 80,000 More Coats

Only 20 percent of needed coats have been collected in annual drive. Here's where to drop them off.

You see the ad every year on the subway: a shivering Statue of Liberty huddled in an overcoat.

Perhaps you've donated in past years, but if you can find a spare parka or raincoat in your closet, make sure to drop it off before Dec. 31 because they are really needed this year. 

Donations have been down and despite adding new drop-off locations and starting two weeks earlier, the drive has only collected 20 percent of what they need: 20,000 of the 100,000 coats necessary.

Last year, donations were also down and 10,000 kids didn't get coats, according to New York Cares, which runs the 23-year-old drive.

So, if you're able to find something, here's where to drop them off in northeast Queens (or see map for more options):

  • The NYPD 111th Precinct, 46-06 215th St. in Bayside 

Coats should be gently used and freshly laundered.
