National Guard Heads to NYC, Long Island

Nearly 1000 troops will disburse around New York City and Long Island.

Nearly 1000 members of the New York Army and Air National Guard will be deployed to New York City and Long Island late Saturday afternoon, Air Force Times reports.

According to the office of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, members of the New York National Guard's 69th Regiment will be deployed to New York City at 4 p.m.

In total, some 6,500 active duty troops are currently standing by, prepared to assist with whatever havoc Hurricane Irene wreaks across the Eastern Seaboard.

As of 3 p.m. on Saturday, Irene continued to pummel the coast of North Carolina with winds up to 85 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
